The Japan Art Institute (Inten) was established in 1898, based on the ideals of Okakura Tenshin, who preached the creation of a new Japanese painting style. After his death, Yokoyama Taikan re-organized the institute in 1914, taking over Tenshin’s desires. Since then, Inten has played a great role in the innovation of modern Japanese paintings.
