Hyun-Sook Song’s paintings bear the imprint of her east-to-west journey. The forms she delineates with only a few sweeping brushstrokes carry the material and muscle memories of the cyclical agriculture sustaining life in the South Korean mountain village where she was born. The figurative elements are not legible scenes so much as metonymic symbols, which capsule all that is unmoored in the transition from Eastern agrarian life to the post-industrial West.
